I heat three gallons of water to 165 and then turn off the heat. I place the grain bag in the water and let it steep for 45 minutes. Then I remove the grain bag (letting it drip into the pot – DON’T squeeze) and place it in a strainer. We use the “spent grains” in bread, muffins, etc. It is really good and nutritious. Then I heat the water to a boil. This can be tricky so keep an eye on it so it doesn’t boil over. Once the water comes to a boil I turn off the heat and add the liquid malt stirring constantly so it doesn’t burn on the bottom.

BEER & PRAYER THOUGHT – Just like the grain is steeped in the hot water to bring forth the flavor and color we too must be steeped. We must be steeped in prayer so that God may bring out the best in us. “What is needed is a Christian life distinguished above all in the art of prayer.” – Pope John Paul II – Rosarium Virginis Mariae #5
