Gifts of Faith Make a Difference

When I was in second grade, Sister Dorothy gave each student a rosary. Mine was a plastic, sky-blue rosary. It was the kind where the beads were molded around the twine. She told us to pray the rosary every night when we went to bed. If we fell asleep, we need not worry she told us, “your guardian angel will finish it for you.” I owe my guardian angel big time!

I still have that rosary today, some 46 years later, tucked away in a keepsake box. Her words and that gift made a lasting impression.

In 2008, when I was far from my faith, my brother gave me two books to read hoping it would lead me back to the faith. One, titled The Faith of Millions, was too obvious and so I tossed it. The other, Pierced by a Sword, looked like a cheesy paperback novel, so I began reading it. That was the book God wanted me to read. That was the book that changed my life and the course of human history (learn more!). I still have that book and recommend it often.

My point in sharing these two short anecdotes is that gifts of faith very often do make a difference in people’s lives. Yes, I’m a firm believer in “faith is very often caught, not taught.” However, very often there needs to be a catalyst, a spark to ignite the fire of faith. So, as you are considering gifts for Christmas, consider giving gifts that might encourage someone to examine or return to their faith. It might just change the world!
